Vegoose Festival
Late Show
The Orleans Arena, Las Vegas

Unlike most shows we do with SCI, the band decided that they wanted this year's Hulaween theme - "The Jungle" - to be a secret. Upon entering the venue, the nearly 6000 attendees, many of whom were attired in Halloween garb, found that we had decorated the stage as an equatorial rain forest repleat with hanging vines, swirling mist and squawking parrots. The show got off to a rollicking start as a gaggle of monkey aerialists chaperoned the band - who were all dressed in gorilla suits -onto the stage. As the musicians launched into "Hey, Hey, We're the Monkeys," hundreds of giant inflatable primate balloon dolls descended from the rafters as hilarious mashup video edits of famous movie gorillas played on two 25' tall video screens flanking either side of the stage. Hulaween 2004 -The WePubliCan Party National ConventionHULAWEEN 2004 - The WePubliCan Party National
October 31, 2004, Madison, Wisconsin

View Original Web Intro

With Halloween happening just 3 days before the 2004 national elections we decided to stir some political comedy, theatre and activism into the witch’s cauldron by celebrating a more accurate vision of our scene's political identity with a politically-themed party of legendary proportions! In turn, SCI and Peak Experience Productions presented the 2004 WePubliCan Party Convention in Madison WI.

The goal of this “political” convention was to develop a “party” platform that celebrated who the event attendees really are (as opposed to the two party system that does not truly represent the views and desires of the majority of people in attendance at this event). More...

Summer Solstice Weekend 2004
Horning's Hideout, North Plains, OR

Featuring:The String Cheese Incident with Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Keller Williams, Hamsa Lilla, Zilla, DJ Harry

The Intention of This Festival was to co-create a community celebration based on love, healing, mindful play and empowering education rather than on the fear, guilt, anger, escapism and suffering that engulfs so much of the world we live in today.

To manifest this intention attendees joined us in co-creating theme worlds based upon the perennial wisdom inherent within five levels of universal order. Each theme world had it's own sculptural installations, playshops, ceremony and mythos. More...

NYE 03-04

This event was a departure from our traditional New Year's Eve Experiences in that it took place in a fully seated venue - Chicago's legendary Auditorium Theatre - thereby ruling out the possibility of our trademark audience-participatory NYE parades. Accordingly, Peak Experience took attendees on a multi-media exploration of "the Journey of the Soul."

To do this we created 12 "tryptych" film sequences (3 synchronized films running simultaneously across a 60' wide screen) edited to match 12 of SCI's songs. More...

Halloween 2003: A Freak-In Convention
View Original Web Intro

The 2003 HULAWEEN FREAK-IN CONVENTION - SCI Incident provided all attendees with the opportunity to re-examine the archetype of the Freak. This event, a mad morph between a freak circus side show, a Las Vegas convention spoof, and a Halloween Incident, dared to explore several dark and powerful realms not previously visited by this band. Attendees of this event were encouraged to Freak-In (as opposed to Freaking Out) as we collectively explored what it means to be a "Freak."

After passing by freakishly distorted art cars, attendees had ample opportunity to mingle and interact with all the other freaks who surfaced for this magical evening. Many attendees had brought lovingly decorated "Free-Keys" to gift to their fellow attendees. Freaks galore! Other pre-show features included a "Freaker By The Speaker" dance contest as well as Individual and Group "Freakiest Costume and Character" Contests.

World renowned magician and alchemist Jeff "Magnus" McBride emceed the show with a few spectacular illusions including the skewering of Billy Nershi's neck with a three foot long sword while he was playing guitar!

The second of this event's three musical sets presented a multi-media show examining five distinct definitions of the archetype of the Freak. More...

The Living Dream Experience

Horning's Hideout 2003

This theme-based music and performance art festival was first held in August of 2003 just outside Portland, Oregon at Horning's Hideout, a truly stunning, camping and concert venue. For 4 days and nights nearly 4,000 attendees helped co-create the world as we want it to be.

This event did not create an idealistic utopia, but instead, a pragmatic realization of the best community festival model that we can hope to achieve at this time. We designed this event to demonstrate a society based on love, healing, education and mindful play rather than on fear, guilt, anger, escapism and suffering.

THE TIME TRAVELER'S BALL
View Original Web Intro

For three joyous nights the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco was host to THE TIME TRAVELER'S BALL. The intention was to give attendees the opportunity to learn how we can all make our time as meaningful as possible. Through a variety of synergistic activities, attendees were able to reach states of being that are both fully engaged in the moment and outside of "normal" time.

Musical guests included Spearhead, Gomez and a very special Keller Williams INCIDENT(with SCI as his band).

This historic venue has three primary halls, each of which was transformed into a different type of time machine. One was MyStIc DeLiRiUm - THE SALOON OUT OF TIME - a sculptural environment in which attendees could explore the concept of time travel in the classic science fiction sense. The Saloon was inhabited by different live characters from throughout past, present and future human Experience.

Another hall featured A COURSE IN TIME, a large walk-through blacklight-illuminated sculptural maze that presented Experiences helping attendees reconsider how most humans relate to time. This installation actually taught participants a real-life method with which to Experience a simple form of time travel. More...

The 2002 HULAWEEN ACADEMUMMY AWARDS
View Original Web Intro

The 2002 HULAWEEN ACADEMUMMY AWARDS SCI Incident was a parody on the annual Academy Awards (which was held at the same venue for many years). Attendees at this event were encouraged to birth and unleash their inner celebrity, monster, ghoul or ghost. Some chose to combine one or more of these character types along with a String Cheese related theme: Jack Nicholson as an electroluminescent jellyfish, Madonna as a hula-hooping vampire, a gaggle of Billy Nershi zombies or Frankenstein as the dread-locked host of Ms. Brown's Tea House. The Superhero's Ball

at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Featuring The String Cheese Incident, Taj Mahal, G Love and the Special Sauce, Keller Williams, The Venusians, Topaz. We designed this event to re-examine our culture's interpretation of the superhero archetype. Starting six weeks before the event audience members were invited, via our web site, to co-create various creative aspects of the event, starting with their own superhero identity, superhero teams and superhero trading cards. These were based on five basic elements of super heroism:

Mind: The Power of Awareness
Body: The Strength of Connection
Spirit: The Immortal Flame
Soul: The Wisdom of the Heart
Unknown: The Experience of Mystery More...

Sensorial Overload

a Halloween Ball at Shea's Theater, Buffalo, NY, with the band moe. The audience was invited - via pre-event listserv discussions and then at event, via numerous sensorial sculptural displays - to re-examine how they use their five senses. We designed and produced a multi-media stage set with props, special effects, a video light show, performance art, professional dancers, multiple custom-made band costumes, and an audience costume contest. The event pinnacled with the band performing live to an experimental movie made during intermission that featured imagery of the sense organs of literally hundreds of the audience and band/crew members. The Full Moon Dream Dance

Featuring The String Cheese Incident, Keller Williams, Dr. Didg, Liza Oxnard, Hanuman, Joules Graves, Baby Gramps. Drawing upon Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream," and Faerie Lore from around the world, the festival site was divided into four realms; Earth, Air, Fire and Water, each of which represented a related direction, emotion, creative arts, and pantheon of Faerie characters. (For example: Fire, which was situated in the south end of the site, represented passion, and the heroic arts such as fire dancing, juggling, magick, and tantra. Its' pantheon of characters included: Fire Drakes, Merrymen, Nymphs and Magicians.) Temples were built at the center of each realm. Workshops in each realm's related arts were held throughout the days. The event culminated with an audience-participatory, midnight rock and roll operatic ceremony under the full moon in which 3000+ fans (most of whom created their own costumes) danced inside a Stonehenge made of 12 foot tall mushroom sculptures as the musicians (The String Cheese Incident with Dr. Didg and friends) played what many fans are calling their most inspired music to date. Dancing Around the Wheel of Time

A two day, millennial New Years festival at the state-of-the-art Oregon Convention Center featuring The String Cheese Incident, The Zen Tricksters, Calobo, Keller Williams, Ashbury Park, and Earth Force. The pre-midnight spectacular featured 400+ costumed performers and a parade of 10 floats thematically embracing different archetypes and each sporting it's own giant animated puppet. With the media hyping of a possible complete social breakdown as a result of the then impending Y2k computer glitch, we were faced with an enormous challenge: How do we bring 5000 people, through the Experience of calmly, rationally and joyously greeting this, the most uncertain moment in social history? We did so by posing the question, "How can we learn to dance gracefully with the unknown as it unfolds in the moment?" More...
